Syed Saddiq has called out ministers of the Perikatan Nasional government for having a “business as usual” attitude towards education during the Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia.

In a Facebook post on 24 January, the Muar MP wrote that even though the pandemic has been affecting the country for almost a year, there are still students who are left behind in their online classes and parents who are unable to provide laptops for their children, including SPM students at their hostels infected with Covid-19.

“Almost every day, I help raise the voices of students and parents. They’re tired even though the school just opened last week,” he said, adding that they have been struggling with internet problems, laptop problems and safety problems in school in regards to the standard operating procedures (SOP).

“But the Ministers are still having a “business as usual” attitude as if Covid-19 is over in the new year 2021.”

Syed then calls outs Minister of Education Mohd Radzi Jidin for not having a plan for students who have to study remotely from home. Syed criticises how he only repeats the broadcast of a “limited and uninformed TV initiative” according to the requirements during the pandemic outbreak.

He also calls out Minister of Communications and Media Saifuddin Abdullah for not talking about poor internet access problems that many are facing and the laptop needs of many students.

“Isn’t this the job of the Minister of Communication for digital learning?” he said.

Syed then questions the Minister of Finance Tengku Zafrul Aziz for not following up with the government’s plan to give 150 laptops from the RM150 million allocation in Budget 2021.

“Until when do the parents have to wait to get the laptops?”

“Honestly I don’t want to bring this issue up anymore. Because almost every day I comment on and urge the government. But parents, students and teachers are tired of the uncertain education plan and unclear plans.”

“Until when are the Ministers going to respond and present their plans?”

Recently, Syed Saddiq managed to raise over RM383,000 in a bid to help students in Muar get laptops and vowed to shave his head if he reached his target. He has since distributed over 200 laptops to students in Muar.
