These days, everyone is becoming increasingly conscious of what they consume in order to reduce wastage and save the environment. When it comes to reducing food wastage, one common method almost everyone does is reducing their food portions. However, there are a few people who take things to a whole other level and chow down on leftovers left by strangers in order to tackle this problem!

In a post that was recently shared to the SG Food Rescue Facebook group, one Singaporean man shared his recent experience at a local coffee shop. According to his post, he entered the shop and saw a table that had an unfinished bowl of noodles left behind by a previous customer. So, he took fresh utensils and decided to finish the bowl of noodles instead of ordering and paying for his own food. An excerpt from his post reads,

“(I ended) up not spending anything and (was) satisfied.”

There apparently is a movement of individuals like this who reject consumerism by practising minimal consumption of certain resources like food in order to reduce wastage. These individuals are known as “freegans“. While the goal to reduce wastage is understandable, many people find freeganism a little gross.

The post was naturally met with a number of comments from Facebook users who expressed their concerns about eating a stranger’s leftovers. Many of them pointed out the risk of falling ill as the person who previously ate the food may have been sick.
