According to an announcement issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (Met), a yellow alert has been issued for the northern states on the peninsula in light of the monsoon season, which began on Monday (6th May).

The yellow alert warned those affected to expect heavy rain and strong winds from Tuesday to Wednesday (7th to 8th May) in Perlis, Kedah, and Penang.

During the monsoon season, northern states can also expect winds of 40 to 50 km/h along with waves as high as 3.5m. According to The Star, the southwest monsoon would bring more winds to these states compared to Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor, which are protected by the Sumatra Island.

The Met Department’s warning system for heavy rain has three categories. Yellow (caution) is for heavy rainfall predicted to take place between one and three days but has not yet reached a stream of heavy rain. Orange (bad) is a stream of heavy rainfall, while red (danger) is for heavy rainfall that exceeds 240mm per day.

So, if you’re in any of the affected northern states, do take note of this weather alert and be prepared for a lot of rain!
