Do take note if you happen to reside in Penang!

According to Free Malaysia Today, the Penang Health Department stated today (Jan 16) that there has been nearly 200% increase in dengue cases in Penang as compared to last year (2018). In just the first two weeks of 2019, 506 cases were reported along with two deaths.

In comparison, there were a total of 177 dengue cases with no deaths reported in the first two weeks of January last year, said the Penang Health Department.

If you happen to live in Penang, please do take note of these 5 hotspot areas where dengue cases are frequently reported:

  • Mutiara Idaman
  • Jelutong
  • Jermal Court
  • Taman Machang Bubok Zon E
  • Taman Desa Damai from Lorong Nangka 2 to 12

It was reported that Taman Machang Bubok Zone E has the highest number of reported cases at 26, then followed by Taman Desa Damai at 24 and Mutiara Idaman at 14.

These are the main hotspot areas, however, there are also 65 other areas that have confirmed dengue cases.

There are four other areas that have been classified as “uncontrolled epidemic”, which includes:

  • Taman Pauh
  • Taman Permata Indah
  • Perai Customs Quarters
  • Apartment Permata Zon C

To reduce these dengue cases, the Penang Health Department has advised the public to consult a doctor if anyone happens to experience fever or any symptoms relating to dengue such as loss of appetite, muscle or joint pain, rashes and many others.

They also reminded people to keep their households clean to avoid potential breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquitoes.

Besides, residents are not encouraged to do outdoor activities but if you happen to go out, always remember to apply mosquito repellent or wear loose clothing that covers all body parts.
