One of the top public universities in the world, Tsinghua University in China, is reportedly in discussion with the Ministry of Education to offer attractive scholarship packages to STPM students.

According to Sinchew, the management of Tsinghua University is actively looking into the suggestion of recruiting STPM students who’ve performed well in the examination and pledged to fully cooperate with the ministry to offer attractive scholarships to eligible candidates.

Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching had also expressed her hope for STPM to be recognised by Tsinghua University so that Malaysian STPM students can have more choices when furthering their studies.

Currently, Tsinghua University is ranked number 17 globally and is famous for its engineering and computer science programmes. Out of the 36,400 students, 10 per cent of them are international students, and over 70 of them are Malaysians.

It was understood that the world-renowned university began recruiting Malaysian students on a larger scale two years ago and focused mainly on candidates with UEC and A-level qualifications.

Apparently, Malaysian students are more favourable because of these reasons:

  • They possess above average standard in Mandarin, Mathematics, and Science subjects
  • They have a good understanding of multiculturalism
  • They are hardworking and willing to learn

Although this initiative is still in the pipeline, netizens are already talking about it on social media with many of them urging the government to take action in order to stop the outflow of local talents.

“Of course, the scholarships are helpful for the students but will they come back upon graduation?” a netizen commented.

We believe that’s also the question every Malaysian is wondering. What’re your thoughts on this issue? Let us know in the comments!
