As far back as our history takes us, it seems that no matter what, Malaysia and Singapore really are inseparable. So much so that all we have between us is a one-hour flight.

In fact, according to a report by OAG Aviation Worldwide Ltd, our countries (some of the smallest on earth!) have the busiest international route.

Planes made 30,537 trips between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore in the 12 months to February, according to a report by OAG Aviation Worldwide Ltd – the equivalent of 84 flights a day!

Note: This chart was made by Bloomberg based on numbers of flights in both directions for each route from the report prepared by OAG Aviation Worldwide Ltd.

By the looks of it, the top 20 list was topped by flights in Asia, with the highest-ranking route outside the region running between New York and Toronto. That route had 16,956 flights. The busiest route for Europe was Dublin-London Heathrow which ranked 14th on the list with 14,390 flights.

The report states that passenger numbers from Hong Kong-Taipei tops the list in the 12-month period. Here’s some of the figures:

  1. Hong Kong-Taipei: 6.5 million people
  2. Jakarta-Singapore: 4.7 million people
  3. Kuala Lumpur-Singapore: 4 million people

However we’re still the most frequent fliers with our route.

Airlines see Asia as the world’s fastest-growing travel market. According to the OAG report, the world’s busiest air route is between Seoul and a tiny island off the coast of South Korea. Planes made 65,000 trips between the South Korean capital and Jeju island in 2017.

But if you’re not one for the skies, don’t forget that we do have a high-speed railway line is being built to link our cities. It’s expected to be completed in 2026, which isn’t too long a wait!
