Us Malaysians are pretty much well-known for our love of food. However, it is pretty alarming how a large amount of Malaysians fall ill due to an unhealthy and unbalanced diet.

This netizen named Hanafi who hails from Penang is certainly no different, and he shared the hard lesson he had to learn when he had to go in for surgery earlier this month on the 17th of April.

In his post, which has since gone viral on Facebook, he explains,

“My sinus problem apparently got worse mainly due to my diet. I ate a lot of food high in sugar and carbohydrates and drank a lot of Milo. The doctor told me that Milo is actually the worst thing you can drink because it has way more sugar than cocoa.”

“Drinks that are high in sugar like Milo can cause our blood pressure to increase. Germs can also easily grow wherever there is a high concentration of sugar, causing infections.”

“I always drink Milo, sometimes more than once a day. Right before I was warded in the hospital, I actually had Milo ais kepal‘ and a glass of hot Milo soon after that. I didn’t feel very good and upon taking a look at my sinuses, the doctor told me that they were actually in a really bad condition.”

“The inside of my nose was so swollen that it made it difficult for me to breathe. I had no idea I had this problem despite having difficulty breathing through my nose and having constant headaches.”

“It was only when I got an eye infection that this problem was discovered. The doctor told me it could get even worse if the infection went to the brain, which was why I had to get immediate surgery.”

After getting his surgery, Hanafi was advised by the doctor to avoid other foods and drinks that are widely believed to be healthy, but are actually the opposite. The doctor told him to cut down on consuming high-sugar products like flavoured milk, cereals like Koko Krunch, and packaged fruit juice. On top of that, his doctor also advised to cut down on soy products, nuts, shellfish, noodles, and stick to a maximum of two slices of bread.

“Take it from me, you can definitely change your diet and lifestyle and don’t wait until you need an expensive surgery to do so.”

On top of that, if you’re one who’s frequently plagued by sinus problems, here are some ways to prevent an infection, according to WebMD;

  • Promptly seek treatment for your stuffy nose as soon as it starts
  • Practise good hygiene like frequently washing your hands
  • Avoid smoking
  • If you have allergies, do your best to avoid things that can trigger them

Let’s all treat this as a valuable lesson, guys! Like anything in life, moderation is the key. In the meantime, we wish Hanafi a speedy recovery from his surgery.
