82 year-old Sumiko Iwamuro is taking the world by storm. Sumiko works at a restaurant, where she has worked for the past 60 years, and makes dumplings or “gyoza” for a living.
What’s interesting about Sumiko however, is that she’s also a popular DJ!
Yup, you read that right! Sumiko aka DJ Sumirock frequently spins at a local nightclub in Shinjuku, Tokyo one night every month to a crowd nearly 60 years younger than her.
She’s cooler than all of us man!
DJ Sumirock’s interest in DJ-ing first started when she was in her 70s, choosing music for her son’s birthday party.
Interested in the tricks of disk jockeys, Sumiko decided to attend a special school, where she added a whole lot more impressing spinning and turntable tricks to her repertoire.
Since then, she has developed her own sounds from her years of spinning. She says her sound mainly consists of techno music, with a little bit of jazz, French chanson and classical music thrown into the mix. Impressive!
Nightclub goers absolutely love DJ Sumirock. According to the Straits Times, A Japanese youth who frequents the club she usually spins at said, “She’s got this energy that goes beyond age, and that can equal any young person’s here.”
What makes her story even more inspiring is that Sumiko is just getting started! She plans to make it big in New York’s famous club scene!
We wish Sumiko all the best in her endeavours. This is further proof that we can chase our dreams regardless of age! Imagine how her grandchildren must feel!
