The number 1 is an outstanding number to most of us, I mean it is the first number that was ever taught to us since we could remember!
But besides it just being a mere unit for quantification, it actually has a very close connection to us Malaysians too. What is it you ask? Well, here are 7 times the number ‘1’ left an impact on Malaysians.
1. 1MDB
Undoubtedly first on the list. I’m sure it was also the first thing that came to mind right?
Every Malaysian (and non-Malaysians) has heard of this ‘strategic development company’ which is wholly owned by the government and knows how strongly it resonates with the people. It has gained international recognition after all.
2. 1st place in paralympics
Remember when Malaysia amazingly went to new feats in the Rio Paralympics 2016?
We didn’t just win one gold, but three in several events! Ridzuan Puzi, Muhammad Ziyed Zolkefli and Abdul Latif Romly successfully placed 1st in T36 100m, T20 shot put, and T20 long jump respectively. These national representatives have definitely made Malaysia proud and have gained much respect from fellow Malaysians for going for gold!
Besides the third gold being bagged on September 11th (that’s a whole lot of 1’s right there!) Guess how much these three amazing athletes got for winning? RM1 million!
3. Highest world record of costume changes under 1 minute
Yes, not only did a Malaysian duo broke through the number 1 spot this 2016 for the most number of costume changes in the world, they also did so under the time period of 1 minute!
Avery Chin and Sylvia Lim completed a jaw-dropping 18 changes, beating the past record of 16 costumes. Not to mention, finishing it with a bang!
If only all your girl friends could get ready this fast right?
The two who hailed from Kuala Lumpur had made the performance look effortless, however they admitted that it was an extremely difficult feat and had practiced it for several years. Glad to see it pay off!
4. Extravagant events that fall on the number ‘1’
11.11 on the clock is a wide-spread belief to make a wish, while 11.11 on the calendar signifies Single’s Day aka the world’s biggest online shopping day thanks to our Chinese counterparts.
Besides that, 1st anniversaries are a huge thing for people and companies which would most often throw elaborate celebrations, just like Shopee’s 1 year old birthday during the fun-filled days from 1st to 12th December! There will be crazy RM1 deals, Shopee bazaar, and of course, the anticipated 12.12 sale!
Not to mention shoppers can win prizes up to RM50,000 such as an iPhone 7 plus, a trip for two to Australia, and many more during this period!
Plus, exclusive to only World Of Buzz readers, enjoy RM7 OFF on any Shopee purchase of at least RM30 with code WOBSH1!

5. 1st Michelin-starred hawker stall
Ipoh-born Chan Hon Meng is the proud owner of the 1st ever hawker stall in the world that was awarded with a Michelin star. His ‘Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle’ can be found in Singapore and is available the for only SG$2 (RM6) – notably the cheapest Michelin dish in the world!
Besides being the 1st hawker stall being awarded a Michelin star, the wait also takes up to 1 hour!
6. Malaysian #1 Athlete: Lee Chong Wei
As known to every Malaysian, LCW is still holding strong to his #1 ranking in the world under the Men’s Singles category. As of Nov 2016, our Malaysian badminton hero has a score of 95,723 points with Chen Long and Lin Dan following close behind at 76,864 and 72,308 points respectively.
In the Rio Olympics 2016, every Malaysian was on the edge of their seats as he battled it out with these two top Chinese competitors. Although he didn’t manage to secure a gold, he will always be number 1 in our hearts!
7. Things you can buy for RM1 in 2016
RM1 can hardly buy Malaysians anything anymore. Besides a McDonald’s sundae cone, a piece or two kuih-muihs, mineral water, and nasi lemak bungkus if you’re lucky, Malaysians used to be able to buy chicken for RM1 too – remember what we were told by our beloved Prime Minister?
