As the first line of defense to any situation that involves a health crisis at large, doctors and nurses make the biggest sacrifices to ensure that the lives of the population are kept safe.
From nurses shaving their heads bald so that they can avoid the hassle of stray hairs while treating patients to doctors sleeping on floors, there’s nothing they won’t do to ensure that a crisis like the Wuhan outbreak can be stopped in its tracks.
However, some of these medical personnel may have had to pay the highest price in saving the lives of others, as the New York Post reports that a doctor has lost his life in the line of duty while treating patients who had contracted the Wuhan virus.
62-year-old Liang Wudong, who was a former ENT medic with the otolaryngology department that treats conditions in the ear, nose, and throat at Hubei Xinhua Hospital, passed away after he contracted the Wuhan coronavirus while working at the Hubei Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine on 16th January 2020.
This came after Wudong had complained of tightening in the chest and was admitted to the hospital after working closely with patients infected with the Wuhan coronavirus. During his checkup, it was revealed that Wudong had a severe chest infection and was immediately put under quarantine.
According to Metro, it is reported that the retired medic had previously suffered from a history of heart disease and coronary heart disease. His death has since sparked many tributes online over social media, praising him for his heroic decision to return into the front-lines of active duty and making the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of saving others.
We hope that Wudong will be able to rest in peace, and hope that those that he has helped throughout this outbreak will honour him and the sacrifices he has made.
