Rich with wonderful cities, and easily accessible across various countries within a few hours; Europe is indeed the perfect backpacking destination. However, there are many hidden wonderful cities would still fly under the radar of most tourists.
So, here are 5 European cities that are totally underrated and deserves more attention than given.
1. Cinque Terre, Italy
Hidden at the north of the Tuscan border, Cinque Terre is a downright paradise. People often think that Cinque Terre is just one place, but it is actually made of 5 villages – Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, all of which are heavenly. All villages are only 3-25 minutes away by train.
If you’re an adrenaline junkie, you get the option of hiking across villages, or cliff diving and swimming at each village too. This is PERFECT and one of the most romantic destinations in Europe.
2. Tirol, Austria
If you’re a fan of mountain hiking, majestic peaks and breathtaking landscapes, this is the place for you. Hiking at the Alps of Tirol is simply magnificent. It is so beautiful anyone will struggle to put it to words.
Besides, you get the best of both worlds in Tirol – the sophistication of a city (not the biggest but it’s fairly nice) as well as an Alpine paradise away from the urban crowd.
3. Hallstat, Austria
With its Baroque architecture, pastel-colored houses surrounded by lakes and mountains, Hallstat is a village you wouldn’t want to miss during your trip. Beautiful beyond words, Hallstat is a UNESCO heritage site located between Salzburg and Graz. This small village is known to be “the Pearl of Austria”.
4. Prague, Czech Republic
Not usually at the top of travellers’ bucket lists, Prague is a spectacular city that should NEVER be missed. With its red-roofed buildings, museums, cobbled streets and castle, Prague is a city rich with history, culture and of course, good food and life.
5. Rotterdam, Netherland
Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands, is often hidden in the shadows of its neighboring city – Amsterdam. Almost completely destroyed by German air attacks during the war, Rotterdam as a result becomes one of the most modern architecturally interesting cities in Europe. This city of modern architecture and beautiful little villages close by are certainly worthwhile to visit.
