A 47-year-old single mother has been receiving death threats from someone claiming that her ex-husband had borrowed RM1,000, which later snowballed to RM10,000.
Lau, who works as a teacher, revealed that the loan shark or ‘Ah Long’ threatened to kill her and her 4 children, aged between 10 and 17, if she fails to settle the debt borrowed by her ex-husband. She and her ex have been divorced since July 2024.

They posted a photo of her kids on social media
China Press reported that the harassment started on April 28 (Monday), with loan sharks even going as far as posting a photo of Lau’s family (including her kids) on a Facebook community group, along with a threatening message demanding payment.

Speaking at a press conference at the Perak MCA building on Wednesday (April 30), Lau shared how worried she is for her family’s safety, especially since she had no idea her ex-husband had taken any loans.
“I told the loan sharks I’m no longer married to him and had no idea he took any loans, but the Ah Long still insisted I pay off the debt. The last call I got was yesterday, they said if I paid RM1,500 and submitted a copy of my divorce certificate, they would stop harassing me at home. But they also threatened to come to my school if I didn’t follow instructions,” she said

She filed a police report
Lau has since lodged a police report at the Ipoh District Police Headquarters on Monday and also filed a complaint with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on April 25. The Facebook post has since been taken down.
Meanwhile, Perak MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Yuen Chan How called on the authorities to track down those behind the syndicate and take firm action.
“These loan sharks are getting bolder. They’re not just going after the borrower, but also targeting their family members to collect the money,” he said.
