Different people tend to use different routes to get to destinations. But, what would you do if your e-hailing driver decides to use a route to your destination that you don’t recognise?
The Johor Bahru Utara District Police recently took to their Facebook page to share how a 17-year-old girl in Tampoi, Johor, had jumped out of her moving Grab ride out of fear that her driver was attempting to kidnap her.
It turns out that the driver was only taking an alternative route to her destination as there was roadwork on the usual route.
They wrote, “On August 11, 2024, the Johor Bahru Utara District Police received a report from a local man, who is a Grab driver, that at 4:50pm on August 11, he had picked up a local female passenger at Taman Seroja to be dropped off at KIP Mall, Tampoi.”
“Due to road maintenance work, the driver was forced to divert from the usual route and head towards Taman Perling to make a U-turn at Jalan Persisiran Perling. But, because she found that the route that was being taken was different, the passenger jumped from the car that was moving. The driver immediately stopped to help, but the passenger was taken to a hospital by the public.”
Following the incident, both the Grab driver and the passenger have made police reports.
The police ultimately found no criminal aspects to this case but urged e-hailing drivers to inform their passengers should they have to take alternative routes.
