Our heart goes out to this teen who never once thought of giving up despite his struggles.
Everyone bears the consequences of the pandemic differently. While those in higher positions quarantine with their ironic instant noodles, some Malaysians are surviving solely paycheck to paycheck, struggling for their next meal and relying on the kindness of strangers.
16-year-old Nik Mohamad Alis Nik Abd Rashid from Kota Bharu, Kelantan has taken up the responsibility of not only a high school student but also a dishwasher and the primary caretaker of his 53-year-old mother, Nik Jah Yusoff.
His mother has been suffering from a stroke for the past three years. Hence, Nik took a dishwashing job at a nearby restaurant with a wage of RM10-15 a day to support both their living expenses and buy household items reported Astro Awani.
His father, unfortunately, passed away two days before Hari Raya this year. Nik clarified that his online learning is not disrupted in any way as he juggles between his classes and caring for his mother. His mother also has a stepchild who comes occasionally to lend a hand but her meals and day-to-day activities are all handled by her son.
“I am sad as he’s still studying but he still has to work and take care of me. We have received help from the Kelantan Islamic Religious Council but no elected representatives have visited so far.”
Nik is set to sit for his SPM examinations next year while taking care of his mother. Despite their conditions, the mother and son are still grateful as they have food on their tables throughout the MCO period thanks to Nik’s job.
A hardworking teenager with a heart of compassion. Let us know what you think about Nik’s story in the comments!
