Next year, the cost of having a meal at our favourite eateries and our go to favourite places to lepak will be slightly more than what we are used to.
It was recently announced that drinks at our local kopitiams are set to increase next year.
Now, it has been reported that we can expect to pay more for mamak food come 2022 as owners struggle to absorb the rising costs of goods.
Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) president Jawahar Ali Taib Khan said that eateries in Klang Valley are likely to impose a 10% increase in price, to cover the 30% increments in costs for raw materials.
“We have been able to maintain our prices for over three years. Presma is perhaps the only association that has asked its members not to raise their prices until December 30,” he explained.
“But definitely we will impose an increment by next year, at a reasonable rate. We will minimise our increment.”
Besides the increase in cost of goods, Jawahar also said that the food and beverage industry is struggling with worker shortages which has forced employers to fork out higher wages to hire staff and thus, increasing overhead costs.
Commenting on the fact that kopitiams are looking to increase drink prices by 20 to 60 sen depending on location, Jawahar said that he is aware of the dependence of customers on several mamak main menus such as nasi, roti canai and others.
“I don’t think it will be an increase of 60 sen, it’s too high. But whatever the case, we will get the perspectives of all relevant parties to get a rationale for the increase made.”
