Every year, a road safety campaign for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri season would be making its rounds in preparation for festivities and this year, it is no exception. Well, except for one thing, the budget was cut from RM50 million to just RM1 million since 2016.
Due to these budget constraints, Transport Minister, Anthony Loke had previously confirmed that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be starring in a road safety video. In fact, you can expect Loke himself to be inside the video as well. Guess we have multi-talented ministers!
In the video, you can see both of them inside giving advice to motorists to stay safe on the road when making their way home. When asked what motorists should do if they get sleepy on the road, Dr Mahathir said they should pull over and rest while Loke said sometimes listening to music can keep the driver awake. Then, Dr Mahathir was asked for advice about elderly drivers on the road and he laughed before answering, “Yes, some people when you’ve reached my age, you lack energy. Usually, 90-year-olds shouldn’t drive lah.” In case you didn’t know, Dr Mahathir loves to drive and just recently, blogger Firdaus Abdullah had posted a video of the prime minister driving around Kuala Lumpur on a quiet morning. His energy is just amazing!“I enjoy driving, but I can only drive during weekend. Even then, there is a driver at the side. When the driver sees something in front, his hand will go like this,” he laughingly said while demonstrating the driver’s cautionary gesture. Loke, who was sitting next to him couldn’t help grinning at Dr Mahathir’s answer.
Being Malaysians, we can’t help but love free stuff discounts so of course, a question about summons discount was asked. Dr Mahathir chided people, saying, “If we were summoned, then we pay. It is a pressure for us to always remember that when we do something wrong while driving, we have to pay summons. But if you can discount summons, then I think it won’t be a warning.”
Finally, the video ended with Dr Mahathir and Loke wishing everyone Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri and to stay safe on the road. Of course, it wouldn’t be a video with Dr Mahathir if he didn’t crack a few jokes. After that you can see him asking the crew whether they voted for him while they laughed and when someone asked whether they could take a photo, the ministers laughed while Dr Mahathir replied that he would charge sekupang for one person.
