The uncle who slapped a non-Muslim 21-year-old for eating publicly during Ramadan recently is getting charged at the Johor Bahru court today (March 19).

In an official police statement last night, PDRM said the investigation had been referred to the Johor State Deputy Public Prosecutor’s chambers. The deputy public prosecutor decided to charge the suspect in this case under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

“The suspect is a 65-year-old local man. A record check on the suspect revealed that he has no previous criminal record,” said Balveer Singh, the Chief Police of North Johor Bahru district.

Section 323 of the Penal Code provides punishment for intentionally causing hurt. If convicted, the accused can be sentenced to a maximum of one year in prison or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

The suspect recently went viral after a video showed him slapping a young man for eating publicly at a convenience store inside a mall in the state. He confronted the young man by asking if he was Muslim, and asked him to show his IC to prove that he was indeed a Muslim, to which the victim refused.

The suspect pleaded guilty

A report by Sin Chew revealed that the suspect arrived at the court at 9 AM today with his son, and the suspect pleaded guilty to the charge.

However, the case has been handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for a re-examination as the defendant disagreed with the description of the case that stated the “victim’s face was swollen.”

The court rejected the defendant’s plea and he was released under DNAA (Dismissal Not Amounting to Acquittal).
