Having a house that is clean is very important. Apart from looking nice and being comfortable, a spotless house can also help prevent unwanted diseases from spreading. However, we need to be mindful which cleaning formulas we use as some contain chemicals that, when mixed, can be harmful to our health.
The National Poison Center of Malaysia has shared on its official Facebook page about a case involving a housewife who suffered from severe poisoning after mixing bleach which contains Sodium Hypochlorite and floor cleaning liquid that contains Hydrochloric Acid.
After mixing, a chemical reaction occurred which produced highly poisonous chlorine gas.
The greenish yellow gas can cause symptoms like heavy coughing, difficulty in breathing, chest and throat pains, nausea and vomiting and severe headache. If exposed for a long time or in an enclosed space (e.g. a bathroom), the symptoms can be fatal.

This incident prompted the centre to remind the public, especially housewives (and husbands), to be more careful not to mix the two liquids together when they are cleaning the floors or walls of their houses.
To anyone planning to do some cleaning around the house, don’t simply mix products and solutions together if you don’t know the chemistry behind it. It could be deadly.
