Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that durians are a Malaysian staple, and Malaysians everywhere await the arrival of the undisputed ‘King of Fruits’ eagerly every year. In fact, I’m sure you have already seen durian stalls popping up everywhere, because durian season is coming!
Of course, we all know that the original taste and flavour of our beloved durian is incomparable to anything else, but have you ever thought about grilling the durian? It is believed to improve its taste as it makes the durian sweeter!

While grilling durian is not an entirely new concept, a recent video posted by a cooking page has got netizens in a frenzy. That’s because the video depicts a durian being grilled directly on an open fire and also some durian flesh being wrapped in aluminium foil and grilled just like how one would grill corn during a barbecue. The durian flesh even has those tantalising grill marks!
But durian purists were repulsed by the video and said that treating fresh durian flesh like that was akin to blasphemy. They said, “I would never treat my durian like that. If you do this you would make it lose all its natural flavour. Durians should only be eaten fresh!” and “This is a great way to ruin great stuff.”
On the other hand, some netizens were excited to try this innovative way of enjoying their favourite fruit. Some said, “I’m about to start a bonfire to try this now!’ and “I love durian and I love this!”
