Malaysians everywhere were shocked when they saw pictures and videos of LRT passengers in a bloodied condition.
At 8.45 pm on 24 May, two LRT trains on the Kelana Jaya line collided. This collision happened between the KLCC and Kampung Baru LRT stations.
The train from Gombak to Kelana Jaya had 213 passengers, 47 passengers are heavily injured due to the accident while 166 passengers are suffering from light injuries. The victims are sent to nearby hospitals.
It is said by the Dang Wangi Chief Police at a press conference that the train from Gombak which was carrying the passengers did not have a driver and was being operated automatically. However, a train from Kampung Baru which was being manually driven was said to have malfunctioned at the time and was in the middle of a test drive. The two trains collided head-on.
The Dang Wangi Chief Police then said that this is probably due to miscommunication at the control centre but authorities will be investigating further into this accident. He also stated that the train from Kampung Baru with the driver was on the wrong track. He added that there were no elements of sabotage in this case as of now. All of the passengers have been rescued.
The minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Ir. Dr Wee Ka Siong addressed the press at KLCC and said that within 24 hours, he will receive preliminary reports. The Ministry of Transport will be forming an immediate task force to investigate the cause and the process will take approximately two weeks.
Prasarana will be updating if the trains will work on 25 May on the affected lines later.
