A Malaysian woman decided to pay for an elderly man’s groceries after witnessing him being scolded by his son. The encounter brought back a poignant memory of a kind stranger who had helped her own family when she was a child.

Swallow Lew took to Facebook to share the experience. She described how the elderly man’s son berated him because he lacked the funds to pay for his shopping, explaining that he could only transfer money at the beginning of the month.

A public scolding

She wrote:

“While queuing to pay at a 99 Speedmart, an elderly man in front of me tried to pay with his card. After 3 beeps, the card didn’t work. The man took out his phone to video call his son and asked, ‘Why isn’t the card working?’

“His son yelled, ‘What day is it?? I told you I’ll transfer money at the beginning of the month!'”

The man gently explained, “I didn’t buy much, just some food.” However, his son retorted, “If the card doesn’t work, just don’t buy anything!”

Paying it forward

Swallow noted that the man had only picked out a pack of crackers, Milo, condensed milk, and a packet of salt. Moved by the scene, she immediately handed her card to the cashier to cover the cost.

Though the man offered to pay her back, Swallow refused his offer. She even gave him some extra cash to ensure he could look after himself.

A memory from her past

As she left the convenience store, Swallow found herself moved to tears, recalling a similar act of kindness from her childhood.

“On the way home, tears streamed down my face because I remembered a time when I was little,” she shared. “My nanny took me to the grocery store to buy a small bag of rice, but we didn’t have enough money and had to return half of it. I asked her, ‘Is this enough for a family as large as ours?’”

“At that moment, a kind person paid for the rice and even bought me a piece of candy. I will remember that person’s face for the rest of my life,” she added.
