The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) carried out operations in the city on 27 March, seizing items that were reportedly blocking pedestrian pathways.

According to DBKL’s Facebook post, the operation took place along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Rembia to ensure that public walkways remain safe, clear, and orderly.

Foldable tables and plastic chairs blocking walkways were seized

DBKL said that, in an effort to keep pedestrian pathways clear of unauthorised items, four seizures were carried out of items that were blocking walkways and disrupting the flow of foot traffic.

“The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) conducted enforcement operations along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Rembia. As a result, four seizures were made of items obstructing pedestrian pathways,” the statement read.

Photos included in the post show several foldable tables and plastic chairs, believed to have been used by eateries for their customers.

DBKL added that monitoring and enforcement efforts will continue to ensure public walkways are always kept clear and used according to regulations.

While many have praised DBKL’s enforcement action, some are wondering why enforcement isn’t consistent for all offenders.

“Been there for over 20 years… and only now they’re clearing it?”

“I see so many mamak shops setting up all the way into the parking spots. Their business seems fine. Is DBKL being selective? Or did someone take a bribe or something?”

“So Arab-owned shops are allowed to do it, right? Like in Bukit Bintang, where they completely block the pedestrian walkway. Is that your doing?”

“Finally taking action… after staying silent for a hundred years.”
