Okay, this one is for the haram folks out there! If you’re bored of the usual birthday cakes that we eat every year then you may want to consider this really cute and savoury option. It looks like this eatery in Penang knows their way to a carnivore’s heart and has prepared an awesome-looking crispy pork belly birthday “cake!” OMG, how??
Well, it’s not really an actual cake per se but a huge slab of crispy pork belly that is decorated to be like a birthday cake. All they need to do is cut it into the size that you want, then decorate it with some sugar flowers and ribbons, as well as place candles on top. Sounds like the best birthday “cake” ever!
Known as 66 Noordin Street and located in Penang, this place is a cafe in the morning but it turns into an awesome bar serving yummy drinks when night falls. This cafe has a pretty cool concept where their menu is focused on roasted pork cuisines and it looks really mouthwatering.
Just look at all the siew yuk variety they have – siew yuk pasta, siew yuk sushi, siew yuk burger; you name, they have it!
They have all sorts of unexpected dishes that feature crispy pork belly as the star of the show such as Asam Belai, spaghetti, hot spicy Korean ramen, sushi and even a crispy pork belly burger. This place is like a dream come true! The savoury pork belly is marinated with a homemade recipe and each batch is freshly roasted to ensure that the meat stays juicy and the skin is exceptionally crispy when you sink your teeth into it.
The food in the kitchen is handled by Aunty Q Recipes, who specialises in crispy pork belly, which explains the delicious food on the menu. When the sun sets, the place becomes a happening bar that is divided into three themed sections. One of them features a British theme, another has Japanese decor while another side is a #throwback to the good old days in Penang with matching retro furniture.
The crispy pork belly can even be delivered to selected locations in Penang but orders must be made in advance. Prices start from RM58 for a portion that can feed five to six people (or maybe lesser if you’re feeling greedy!).
