Usually, cancer survivors are praised for their bravery and strength in overcoming the disease. However, one teacher in China decided to isolate a young cancer survivor from his classmates because he believed that the boy was contagious. Really now?
Nextshark reported that an 11-year-old boy from Huai’an, China was forced to sit at the back of the class by the teacher because he thought that the boy was a hazard to them.
The young boy had Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma before he was declared cancer-free after going through many chemotherapy sessions.
FYI, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a kind of cancer that originates from the lymphatic system, which is a network system that fights disease. For this disease, tumours are developed from lymphocytes – a type of white blood cell.
The boy was enrolled in a new school in Quanzhou, Fujian province after he successfully beat his cancer. All seemed well until the boy’s father, Zhou learnt that his poor son was humiliated in his class.
Zhou found out about this issue after his son returned home without his midterm grades. The boy told his father that the teacher forbade him to take the midterm test and claimed that he was “contagious”. The teacher then forced him to sit alone at the back of the class, isolating the young boy from his peers.
As of now, the school’s principal has begun a probe against the discrimination allegations. Good on them for investigating the matter.
It’s unfortunate that little boy had to go through this situation. We hope that his family will be able to console the boy and help him bounce back from the ordeal.
Cancer is not contagious guys, you can’t possibly ‘catch’ it from someone who had it. Instead of isolating them, we should be celebrating their victory against the big C!
