A recent study by Electronics Hub pretty much confirmed something that we Malaysians have known for a while, which is that we are ‘addicted’ to our smartphones and computer screens.
Listing out the average screen time and usage by country in 2024, the study found that Malaysians recorded an average screen time of 8 hours and 17 minutes daily, the 8th highest in the world!
Malaysia records the 2nd highest average screen time in Asia
According to the study by Electronics Hub, that makes us have the 2nd highest average screen time in Asia behind only the Philippines.
Here are the top 10 countries with the highest average screen time:

- Russia – 8 hours 21 minutes
- Malaysia – 8 hours 17 minutes
- UAE – 8 hours 11 minutes
- Thailand – 7 hours 58 minutes
Furthermore, when the amount of time spent looking at screens was calculated as a proportion of time per day Malaysians are awake, it was revealed that we spend a whopping 48.41% of our time awake looking at screens.
Malaysia ranks high in the amount of time spent on social media too
Meanwhile, as for the time spent on social media, Malaysia ranked highly too, whereby Malaysians were found to have spent 16.36% of their time awake browsing social media.
In relation to that, Malaysia was also among the top 20 countries watching the most TikTok videos daily, placing 10th globally with an average of 123 TikTok videos watched every day.
Besides that, Malaysians also spend 3 hours and 40 minutes on average every day on their computers or 21.43% of our time awake, the 9th highest in the world.
The statistic is even worse for the average time on smartphones daily, whereby Malaysians were found to have spent 4 hours and 37 minutes on their phones every day, or 26.98% of our time awake, the 10th highest globally.
How the study was conducted
According to Electronics Hub, the data used for the study is correct as of March 2024, whereby its data analysts reviewed statistics from DataReportal (2024) and Sleep Cycle.
Electronics Hub then ranked countries based on the average daily hours spent looking at screens as a percentage of average waking hours.
The study also ranked countries based on different types of screen time across different devices and media platforms.
