Despite all the doom and gloom we read about our country from Malaysians on social media, it is worth noting that not all of them represent the reality, but rather the perception that these netizens have.
Case in point, Malaysia has been featured favourably in many global studies and publications this year, including being the most loved country in Asia, having the 3rd happiest population aged under 30 in Asia and being Asia’s 6th most prosperous country.
“Syukur Malaysia masih aman”
Well, we can add another one to the list, this time in the latest edition of the Global Peace Index by the Institute for Economics & Peace. In case you missed it, our country was ranked the 19th most peaceful country in the world in the 2023 edition of the study.

The Global Peace Index 2024
The 18th edition of the index which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness, Malaysia is 1 of 2 Asian nations that made it to the top 10 global list, the other being our neighbouring country Singapore which placed 5th.
The study uses 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources and measures the state of peace across three domains: the level of Societal Safety and Security; the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict; and the degree of Militarisation.
For 2024, the study introduced a new measure of global military capability that incorporates military sophistication, technology, and battle readiness into a single measure.

Furthermore, Malaysia was also ranked joint 1st in the Ongoing Conflict domain and 3rd in the Militarisation domain.
Overall, we scored 1.427 out of a scale of 5, with the lower score, the better in the study.
