Scalpers have always been the bane of society’s existence, by buying things and reselling them at much higher prices, to those who find it difficult to obtain the item themselves. Some scalpers even cause some items to be sold out just so people would HAVE TO come to them for the item.
Sadly, even street food isn’t safe from scalpers now.
Sin Chew Daily, an elderly, internet famous stinky tofu seller in Setapak is now facing off with scalpers who are mass purchasing his dish, only to resell it online at insanely increased prices.
The elderly uncle, who has been running his stinky tofu business for 16 years, has always had a long line of loyal customers who are willing to spend hours queuing up for his delicacy. But, some of them have since spotted the uncle’s stinky tofu being sold on the social media platform, Xiaohongshu.
What makes this worse is that the scalpers are earning way more than the elderly uncle, who is tirelessly making the stinky tofu to make a living.
These scalpers have apparently been selling the uncle’s stinky tofu for up to RM20 per box, when the uncle sells it for RM5.50 for 4 pieces and RM13 per box. Some scalpers have even offered their services to queue up in the long line on the customer’s behalf.
Netizens have since warned others to not purchase the stinky tofu from these scalpers as it is the elderly uncle that deserves the income. They have also suggested that the uncle limit the amount to purchases per customer.
It is truly saddening to know that there are people out there who are willing to make big bucks out of the hard work of an elderly man.
