Following the Covid-19 pandemic, most work places decided to maintain their flexible working arrangements as many started realising the importance of having work-life balance.

With that being said, doesn’t work-life balance mean allowing employees to start their work at a later time, as long as they ensure they cover for the time they’ve missed?

A Malaysian recently took to the XUAN Play Facebook page to anonymous confess their dissatisfaction over their company fining employees for being late.

They wrote, “I have been working in this company for 3 years and the most dissatisfying thing is their penalty mechanism. Everything is solved with fines, especially the ‘late’ fine. RM60 for 5 minutes of tardiness, RM130 for 10 minutes, RM250 for half an hour and RM600 for an hour.”

They went on to explain their grievance of being allegedly treated as an example, by being fined even if they are only mere minutes late while others who are much later are not fined.

“I feel like a scapegoat, and I’ve been put a pedestal to achieve a deterring effect. My colleagues are sometimes much later than me, for several hours, and I was fined for being just a little late, which feels unfair,”

“When I gave my feedback to the company, the company only said a few perfunctory words, which caused me to have mixed feelings.”

Due to their employers being so calculative, they now have an issue with sometimes having to work late but not receiving overtime pay for it.

“Sometimes, because the tasks given by the company need to be processed, we have to work overtime to complete it. But, after having to work late, we still need to be on time the next day and the saddest thing is that there is no overtime pay,”

“In addition to this, there are all kinds of problems, working environment factors. I don’t want to stay but I don’t want to look for another job. If I look for another job, I will need time to adapt. I feel like I wasted 3 years. I did learn a lot but after a long time, (the company) has become more and more unsuitable,” they added.

They ultimately asked what they should do in their situation.

What would you do if you were in their shoes? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
