Former Penang Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy Yeoh Soon Hin has lauded the future of the state’s tourism sector, saying that it would thrive further with more direct flights to the state.
According to BERNAMA, there have been increasing announcements from airlines establishing direct flights to Penang, which would positively impact tourists’ arrival in the state.
Moreover, the Penang State Government is also working hard to lay the foundation in the hope of connecting Penang with major cities in the world.
He asserted,
“We hope to be able to establish direct flights to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Chennai, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Chengdu, Tokyo, Seoul, Istanbul and Sydney by year-end.”
With the dissolution of the Penang State Legislative Assembly and the State Election today, Yeoh would be passing the baton to the next tourism councillor, hoping that his successor will continue the pursuit of completing these missions to bring direct flights to Penang International Airport (PIA).
Yeoh added that creating direct air connectivity with key global destinations would present Penang with immense potential in terms of developing tourism, trade and the economy.
On Thursday (10 August), AirAsia announced that its direct flight from Hong Kong to Penang has been newly resumed, operating on a thrice-weekly frequency.
