Small vendors tend to try and get creative to help them stand out in the crowd of the food and beverage industry. Just recently, a chicken rice business in Sarawak successfully did so with its flight-themed branding.
But, it appears that not every vendor’s creative ideas are acceptable to the general public.
Influencer Wan Hadi, took to his X page to call out a doughnut vendor in Penang for its somewhat sexualised marketing strategy.
Wan Hadi wrote, “Is no one going to confront this brother’s marketing style? Sitting there (saying) ‘berayaq’ (which is a slang word for ‘wet’) and twerking in front of the food, what is this?”
The reason why the doughnut vendor is being called out is because he went viral for arching his back while saying somewhat lewd things in regards to his doughnuts (think: food porn) in front of customers.
While saying the phrases that can be interpreted as sexual, he also made facial expressions of sexual pleasure.
Children see, children do.
Malaysians have also pointed out that the doughnut vendor’s actions are being imitated by children, considering it has gone viral. Netizen MIMI ASMARA, shared an example of this.
She wrote, “What is the punishment for equating food with wet v*ginas, squirting an*ses, d*ggie actions, s*domy actions? Kids copy everything we do, even the trash we think goes over their heads. They’re sponges, even for our worst (actions). (They are) slow with education but bad things, (they) are indeed fast to catch.”
The vendor has since taken to their TikTok account to share their side of the story and apologise for any misunderstandings. They’ve also chosen to change the name of their business to steer away from ‘Berayaq’.
“We’ve received all the criticism from all of you, and the names of both of our accounts have been changed to ‘Bertanah’. For everyone’s information, ‘berayaq’ means that our dough is watery, and when the melty doughnut is eaten in the mouth, the ‘jet’ means there’s a ‘kick’,
“And for everyone’s information, ‘cirit’ (which translates to diarrhoea) is not our tagline and the video that is going viral recently, it was not our idea to say such things. We were only acting as instructed. We hope that this answers all questions. We apologise if our video was misinterpreted,” they shared.
