A student from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam died on November 13 (Wednesday), while undergoing a Reserve Officer Training Corps (Palapes) session.

According to a statement by the Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, the victim did not have any external injuries and was confirmed to have died from heat stroke with multiple organ failure.

“The cause of death was heat stroke with multiple organ failure and the case has been classified as sudden death (SDR),” he said.

He added that the student’s father was told that his son had been admitted to the Shah Alam Hospital after falling unconscious at the training grounds on November 10 (Sunday).

Investigations found that the student had been participating in Palapes at UiTM Shah Alam since the end of October and was undergoing a fitness test before basic training began next year.

“On the day of the incident, the student was fined by the coach to do push-ups for missing a running session before he was seen jumping around and falling over,” he explained.

He then allegedly fainted and was rushed to the hospital where he was being treated at the Red Zone emergency ward in a semi-conscious state and with a high body temperature.

“Initial treatment was given to hydrate him but this did not give a positive response. The trainee suffered cramps and follow-up treatment was provided before he was admitted into the intensive care unit,” Datuk Hussein said.

The police have since taken statements from 9 witnesses including the father of the trainee, who filed a police report on November 15 (Friday).

“Any individual with further information can contact the Criminal Investigation Officer, Assistant Superintendent Mohd Khairi Kamaruddin at 012-2666025,” he added.
