The OKU community in Malaysia certainly do not have things easy for them. From the lack of proper disabled-friendly facilities, to having to face discrimination, abuse and being excluded, the list goes on.
A few days ago, a Twitter user shared a notice which was placed in a Family Mart outlet in Nu Sentral which had managed to get the mart in trouble.
The notice was meant to serve as a reminder to customers to dispose of their trash after eating but unfortunately, it was a little more insensitive than intended as it read, “Please throw away your trash after eating. Only OKUs don’t throw away their trash”.
Some netizens claimed that the staff who worked at the outlet had miswritten the notice and that it was all a misunderstanding and that the FamilyMart outlet probably meant that only disabled people do not need to throw away their trash as staff will provide the service for them.
After the tweet had gone viral, FamilyMart Malaysia has since responded to by saying that the notice was unacceptable and an investigation will be carried out. “The team at the store was also given stern action to ensure this does not happen (again). We once again apologise for this,” the statement reads.
What do you think of the notice? Was it insensitive or was it just worded incorrectly? Let us know in the comments.
