All family members are expected to sit together for a reunion dinner one night before the Chinese New Year celebration. Unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury of being together with family during the festive season, especially senior citizens at old folks’ home.
PM’s daughter, Nurul Izzah, who was saddened by this decided to do something so that the elderly didn’t have to celebrate alone.
“I want to give them the liveliest reunion dinner”
Nurul kickstarted her plan by visiting the supermarket to get the necessary ingredients to prepare the reunion dinner – seafood, vegetables, tofu, and others. However, food preparation was only a part of her plan.
“After that, I went to Mr. DIY to get the CNY decorations.”
The opportunity to decorate and “spice up” the old folk’s home has given Nurul a sense of satisfaction and happiness.
“It’s so satisfying to see the nursing home went from dull to lively with the decorations. It was so red!,” Nurul expressed on her Facebook post.
The former MP of Permatang Pauh also shared a conversation she overheard, where a group of surprised grannies wondered, “What’s the PM’s daughter doing here?” The elderly at the scene didn’t have the chance to have a reunion dinner with their respective families, but that day, Nurul hoped that she could be part of their “family”.
“I hope they can accept me as part of their family members. Something like their own daughters.”
Parents are everything
Near the end of her post, Nurul took the opportunity the remind everyone out there, especially the youth to NOT forget their parents, who have sacrificed a lot just to see us grow up.
She also expressed her wish to see everyone being able to return to their hometown during CNY to see their parents.
“Hold their hands tight, look at their smile and old faces, and cherish every moment spent together.”
Nurul also said that she was grateful to have the opportunity to serve the elderly and give them something to remember, and she wished everyone a happy Chinese New Year.
