Earlier this year, the Minister of Housing and Local Government of Malaysia, Nga Kor Ming, said that the ministry would be giving out an award for the “Toilet of the Year.”
It is said that Nga Kor Ming had attended a program with Radio Television Malaysia where he confirmed that they would be giving out the award to the Toilet of The Year in an awards ceremony on 30th October.
The minister has said that one of the aims of improving the toilets is to gear up for Visit Malaysia 2025, reported Oriental Daily.
“To improve the cleanliness level of public toilets across the country, I have proposed the BMW Public Toilet Plan starting this year. This initiative involves both the government and private sectors.”
“This will not only help improve Malaysia’s image as an international tourist destination, but also prepare for the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2025.”
The Toilet of The Year award where the winner can receive RM10,000 in cash, a certificate and a trophy serves as an encouragement for all establishments.
Nga says that the ministry has been consistently trying to improve the toilets in Malaysia since 2012 with the introduction of “Local Government Public Toilet Hygiene Star Rating Guidelines”. However, up till 2022, only 38% (1,096) of public toilets and 37% (9,695) of public toilets owned by private premises met the standards.
Well, personally, we do notice that the toilets outside have been getting cleaner and it is definitely something that we welcome. We can’t wait to find out which establishment will win the award!
