New Covid-19 Cluster Detected In Sabah Among 7 Detainees At Lahad Datu Police Station

The Benteng Cluster is a new Covid-19 cluster that has been detected in Malaysia after the Ministry of Health conducted screening on new detainees at the Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters (IPD) lockup in Sabah.

A total of 50 detainees have been screened as of 28 August, and out of that numbers, seven tested positive while 43 tested negative.

The positive cases of this cluster involves six illegal immigrants and one Malaysian citizen, all of whom were reported to be asymptomatic. They have since been admitted to Lahad Datu Hospital.

Measures to prevent and control further infections such as cleaning and disinfection processes have been carried out at the affected locations, while active cases detection and close contact screening are still ongoing. The cause of the infection is also still under investigation.

As of 1 September 2020, Malaysia recorded 14 new Covid-19 cases which includes five import cases and nine local transmission cases.

21 patients recovered bringing the total number of active cases to 151, with five patients in the Intensive Care Unit and three needing breathing assistance.

One death was also recorded bringing the death toll in the country to 128.
