Recently, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and animal lovers protested against the disposal of stray dogs in Negeri Sembilan.
This then led to them being urged to take a more constructive approach by adopting the strays.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar (MB), Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, shared his belief that the group should not hold protests but instead, help the animals involved by adopting them and taking them into their care.
“The disposals follow the regulations in place. Based on the standard operating procedure (SOP), these dogs will be kept for several days after being caught. During this period, NGOs and private rescuers who want to help can adopt and keep these dogs at home,” he said.
Safety concerns led to the disposal of stray dogs
Aminuddin emphasised that the state government will continue to implement the policy by taking into account public safety factors following high numbers of complaints about stray dog problems.
“In this matter, the state government needs to be fair in resolving complaints, especially when there was a case of an attack by stray dogs that caused injuries. When this incident happened, no NGO came forward to assist,” he added.
On top of that, he clarified that NGOs were provided with land for dog shelter programmes, but the number of stray dogs continues to increase as some release the dogs back into public areas.
“This situation only occurs in our country. If we look at other countries such as Singapore, Japan and China, there is no problem of stray dogs like this. Abroad, dogs are put on leashes every time they go out, as a safety measure so that they do not disturb others,”
“However, the situation is different in our country, where these animals roam freely, including in front of houses. There are also cases of dog bites that disrupt the daily affairs of the public,” he explained, adding that the situation may get out of control without disposal methods.
