Gone are the days when you are bombarded with questionable messages inviting you to get easy loans from ‘certified’ money lenders.
Now, loan sharks operate differently as most have embraced technology by obtaining your details through apps – with the syndicate’s latest tactic are currently under purview of the police.
According to netizens commenting on @hmetromy‘s tweet, these apps are made available on the Google Playstore and will gain your personal information once installed on your phone.
Adding to her tweet, this netizen spoke from her own experience having downloaded one loan shark-developed app on her phone.
“These are some of the apps made available by loan sharks. I became a victim after downloading the EasyD*** app,” wrote the netizen.
“The incident was then reported to the police.”
According to the Federal Police Commercial Crime Investigation Department Director, Datuk Kamarudin Md Din, “to lure the people into engaging their services, the syndicates would advertise loan offers through social media platforms like Facebook and Google.”
“Once the application has been downloaded, the victim has to press a button that allows the syndicate to access the location, files, audio records, media, photos, videos and a list of contact phone numbers available on the victim’s mobile phone.”
We urge members of the public to not fall for such scams. It is always best to seek advice on financial matters, instead of risking it just for the sake of a few bucks.
