New Zealand’s beloved prime minister Jacinda Ardern recently made the shock announcement that she is resigning as she confirmed a national election is set for October this year.
In her speech, Ardern said that she “no longer had enough in the tank” to do the job and that “it’s time”.
“I’m leaving, because with such a privileged role comes responsibility. The responsibility to know when you are the right person to lead and also when you are not. I know what this job takes. And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice. It’s that simple.”
“I am human, politicians are human. We give all that we can for as long as we can. And then it’s time. And for me, it’s time,” she explained.
Praised for her work
The prime minister is widely loved all around the world for her work in developing New Zealand as well as her handling of major issues such as the Christchurch mosque shootings back in 2019 as well as the Covid-19 pandemic.
Her resignation was received as a shock to other world leaders who took to social media to send her their regards. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described her as a leader of intellect, strength and empathy and that she has become an inspiration to many.
Meanwhile, Canada’s leader Justin Trudeau said that she had made an “immeasurable” difference to the world.
On the other hand, in Malaysia, netizens praised her for stepping down when she no longer felt capable enough to perform in the role.
Netizens compared her with our politicians who have often been accused of being power hungry and lack the self awareness on when to step down when they are not performing at the best of their duties.
“Hope (that) in Malaysia, we have someone just as honest and upfront.”
“Certainly what most of our Malaysian politicians should do. Enough of the fighting over assets and wealth when you don’t even bring about any benefits to the rakyat,” commented a user.
Another user stated, “In Malaysia, as long as they can hold on to power, then they will never step down.”
What do you think? Should the practice of stepping down when not performing also apply to our MPs and Cabinet members? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section.
