Chinese New Year celebrations may be over, but some of us are still counting the notes from the Angpows we got. The amount does not matter but it’s undeniably exciting to get more than you expected.

A Malaysian woman’s excitement, however, was cut short when she noticed something on the RM50 banknote that she got in her Angpow packet. The note was damages and deemed NOT usable for transactions. In her Xiao Hong Shu (RED) post @somok什陌, Tracy (pseudonym) expressed her shock at “unboxing” the Angpow money.

“CNY is finally over and I’ve been really patient in collecting all the Angpow before unboxing them.”

What’s the damage? Now, if you take a close look at the banknote, you’ll notice that most of the holographic stripe is absent. A usable banknote should have a holographic stripe that features the denomination 50 and the hibiscus flower and a matt-structure effect, according to the Central Bank of Malaysia.

Did Tracy reach out to the giver and tell the person about the damaged banknote?

In a brief conversation with WORLD OF BUZZ, Tracy said that unfortunately, she couldn’t remember who gave that specific pack of Angpow.

“I can barely remember the givers of each Angpow, and just when I got excited for getting the one with big amount, this happened.”

Tracy also told WORLD OF BUZZ that she had visited the bank and tried to deposit the banknote into the ATM, but it didn’t work.

“The ATM rejected the banknote even after I had tried a couple of times.”

At the time of writing (February 29), Tracy said that she was still keeping the banknote to herself, and instead of discarding it, she would visit the bank again and replace the banknote with a new one at the counter.

In case you are not aware, Malaysian banks allow you to replace damaged banknotes that are deemed “unfit for circulation”, which you will receive an equivalent amount of money’s worth in return. You can read more about it on Ringgit Plus.

This is probably a cue for you to check all your banknotes, especially those you got from the Angpows, and make sure that all banknotes are usable.
