Studying abroad is a luxury that not everyone can afford. However, if you’re one of the students who are planning to study in Australia, you might need to save up. A LOT.

Reuters reported that the Australian government will increase the amount of savings international students will need to get a visa. The increased amount is probably way higher than you expected.

For international students, you’re expected to show proof that you have an amount of at least AUD 29,710 (approximately RM93,000) in your savings to get your visa, effective Friday (May 10). The government previously increased the amount from AUD 21,040 to AUD 24,505 (approximately RM65,800 to approximately RM76,715).

Why the increase in just 7 months?

The lift of the COVID-19 restrictions triggered a sudden “rush” of migrants, straining the already tight rental market.

The increase in savings is due to the Australian government’s concern about the migrants straining the housing market.

“We are significantly reducing migration levels, we are in the middle of the biggest drop in migration numbers in Australia’s history, outside of war or pandemic,” Clare O’Neil, the Home Minister affairs said.

Warning letters had been sent to 34 education providers for “non-genuine or exploitative recruitment practices.” If found guilty, they could be jailed for up to two years and banned from recruiting students.

In the meantime, it is reported that the Higher Education Ministry in Malaysia will meet with the Australian government to discuss the increased savings for international students.

“We want to know whether the policy involves all countries or only certain countries,” Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said.

What do you think of the raised amount? To those who have plans to study in Australia, does this halt your plan or are you going to proceed?
