With the rising living cost, the prices of goods have also expectedly gone up, which made many eateries in Malaysia increase the price of their menu. But what about our neighbouring country, Brunei?

Just recently, Aliff Awang, the husband of a Malaysian model and actress, Fatin Afeefa shared his experience buying a few cheap packs of rice during his visit to Brunei. At the beginning of the video, Aliff shows the price for a portion of Nasi Katok, a famous dish in Brunei – 1.20 Brunei Dollar for takeaway, and 1.70 Brunei Dollar for dine-in, which is approximately RM3.90 and RM5.60 respectively.

Nasi Katok consists of rice, chicken, sambal and gravy. Aliff purchased 7 packs of Nasi Katok for a total of Brunei Dollar 8.40, which is approximately RM27.70. He proudly said he only had to pay with a Brunei Dollar 10 banknote.

“With this price in Malaysia, they’ll only serve you chicken bones,” he added.

Aliff then jokingly told others to marry Bruneians if they wish to save money, and said “Brunei in my heart”.

In his Tiktok video, the vendor also told Aliff that he can sell up to 5000 packs of Nasi Katok per day.

“Different currency, different value, different lifestyle”

His video, however, was not well received by many Malaysians who pointed out that the prices will be different if he converts the currency. Some have also sarcastically asked if he had visited the immigration department for his migration process.

“Immigration department is open every weekday, try to apply.”

“Try to sell the rice for yourself if you want cheap stuff, let’s see how long you last.”

“There is a lot of Nasi Lemak with chicken here in Kedah that costs you only RM1.”

“If you convert into MYR, it’s a different price.”

“Have you moved?”

“No need to convert the currency. If you’re living with a 1,000 salary in Brunei, it makes sense due to the low living cost. But is it even possible in Malaysia?”

“Yeah, go to Brunei, and you’ll see how Bruneians go to Miri, Sarawak every weekend.”

“Bruneians shop in Miri every week.”

“As Malaysians, we have never eaten RM 1 Nasi Lemak with chicken bones.”

“That’s not RM10, but Brunei Dollar 10. Different value.”

What do you think about the difference? Can we even make a comparison out of it based on the differences in living costs in Malaysia and Brunei?
