Malaysian content creator Eizuwan Fulamak recently took to his Threads account to showcase how a RM5 banknote, which was placed neatly inside a plastic cover, was being sold for 6 Euros (RM29) at a vendor in Spain.
He wrote, “I stumbled upon an antiques booth in Barcelona, Spain. Our RM5 note is being sold for up to €6 (RM30).”
Netizens shared their two cents
While netizens were amused and baffled by the discovery, one Malaysian pointed out that the RM5 note may have special value due to it being among the nominees for the “Bank Note of the Year Award” by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS) in 2012.
The Bank Note of the Year Award considers artistic merit, design, use of colour, contrast, balance, and security features of each nomination.
“Okay, we can start spamming Facebook pages belonging to Spanish people saying, ‘I’m selling old money from Malaysia‘.”
“Buy it lah, brother. Support local products.”
“Many don’t know this, the RM5 note was actually nominated for the most beautiful bank note in the world in 2012.”
