With only 2 weeks into 2024, many places worldwide have been struck by disasters that brought many losses.

A video showing possibly MILLIONS of fish that washed up on the beach recently circulated on social media. According to the caption in the video, it took place on January 7 in the Philippines. The crowds were seen gathering on the shore, with some carrying huge nets to take the fish away while others just mingled around and recorded the rare phenomenon.

It happened at the coastline surrounding the municipality of Maasim, located in the Sarangani province on the southern tip of Mindanao island.

Those who had no idea about the school of fish that washed ashore continued to enjoy the “breathtaking scene”, while others who were aware of impending signs of disaster couldn’t help but wonder what was next.

Not long after the incident, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Southern Philippines on January 9. The quake struck at a depth of 70km, about 100km southeast of Sarangani municipality off Mindanao island. The quake, however, did not trigger a tsunami alert, according to the US Tsunami Warning System.

No deaths or injuries were reported.

The phenomenon at the beach occurred less than 48 hours before the quake hit the country. While many believed the fishes that washed ashore were trying to warn the world of what was following, experts, on the other hand, pointed their fingers at upwelling instead, according to Live Science.

The next day, a day before the quake, the public was seen gathering at the beach to collect the dead fish.

Regardless, we hope those affected by the disasters are doing okay.
