Taking to Twitter, this netizen shared a video of this Malaysian student sharing her rant over an afterparty event held during the Nottingham Malaysia Games (NMG) despite following the Student Union’s guidelines, and no one was forced to partake in the event.
Here is the video in question.
The video was met with mixed responses from netizens on both sides of the divide.
Due to the overwhelming response, the Nottingham Malaysian Society had this to say.
“The Nottingham Malaysian Games (NMG) and the Afterparty are two completely different events. The society is contractually bound to this event and there is nothing in the constitution that prevent us from hosting an Afterparty.”
“Malaysia culture is a very broad and beautiful thing and consists of more than just Malay-Muslim ideologies.”
Some spoke otherwise.
I was the President of the Nottingham Malaysian Society 2015/2016. The Games were a lot of work to organise, you really wouldn't believe the amount of labour needed to organise an event like that. However, we didn't have an official afterparty at the club for 1 very simple reason https://t.co/SpoTkNWfXn

One netizen writes: “I was President of the Nottingham Malaysian Society 2015/2016. We didn’t have an official afterparty at the club for one very simple reason.”
“Half of the committee were Muslim and they weren’t the type to go drinking at a club. They broke their backs making NMG a reality.”
“To have the society organise an afterparty at a club where members and volunteers can’t join seems like a disservice.”
“Organise an afterparty privately. But putting it unders a society’s name when one of the aims of NMG is inclusivity can give a bad impression.”
