JAPAN EXPO MALAYSIA, also known as JEMY in short, is the country’s most comprehensive physical exhibition aiming to promote and showcase all things Japan, making visitors think about what they love about Japan! J-Pop entertainment, one of the major Japanese exports, takes centre stage, with G-Yu Creative and Siam Connection leading the way in promoting the industry and using music as a key component to strengthen cross-cultural ties between Japan and other Asian nations.

The grand opening ceremony is taking place on August 18, 2023, at 3 p.m and will be graced by the Japan Ambassador to Malaysia, Takahashi Katsuhiko and Director General Dato’ Dr. Ammar, Tourism Malaysia, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia.

At JEMY, the goal is to bridge a closer tie between the two nations’ cultures and trade as well as to be the most comprehensive physical exhibition for Japan related to Japanese products and services. The event is divided into seven distinctive zones: the Taste of Japan zone (OUTDOOR, Piazza area), the INDOOR area spreading from Center Court to the Orange Zone which is located in the mall.

The Outdoor Taste of Japan Zone features renowned brands like:

  • Oyoshi green tea drinks from F&N offer a delightful array of Japanese delicacies, including traditional tea, mochi ice cream
  • Ajinomoto new gyoza & takoyaki
  • Otafuko’s special recipe of okonomiyaki
  • Shakariki432’s well-known yakitori grilled with Binchotan charcoal.

Additionally, Zeal Automation vending machines cater to Japanese F&B importers, providing a convenient distribution channel closer to consumers.

The Center Court on Level 2 houses the Travel Zone, showcasing exciting destinations. Klook, a renowned travel platform, offers exclusive packages for Japan-bound travellers, and in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, visitors can explore Malaysia’s wonders. Framemotion has created Digital Matsuri Play, the first funfair in this zone.

The vibrant Orange Zone on Level 2 is a hub of arts and culture, including the Education Zone, where visitors can get a free consultation from Globis University, known for their MBA program. Mainichi Japanese language school shares various strategic and effective Japanese language programs from different prefectures in Japan. Oakhouse provides well-planned options for students or working adults planning to stay long-term in Japan.

In the Orange zone, visitors also participate in the Yukata-wearing activity, immersing themselves in traditional Japanese attire. The Health and Beauty Zone offers rejuvenating experiences and showcases the latest wellness trends. J-Beauty and Mimone spa boutique promote special packages and products for self-care and holistic well-being. Master Alice, a well-known feng shui master, offers interesting Japanese tarot card reading, widely accepted by corporate clients in more than nine countries, including Japan. MITSUME, known for bright and cheerful illustrations, brings captivating illustrations to life.

No Japanese event is complete without a Cosplay Contest & performances

Cosplayer fans shone in JEMY’s signature Cosplay Parade, and for the first time, a Cosplay Contest was held with renowned fashion designer Melinda Looi and talented cosplayers Thames and Amelia as judges. Participants from all walks of life will compete for the coveted title.

To make things even more immersive, cosplayers can bring their characters to life against the backdrop of Tokyo Town’s various engaging and Instagrammable design features and architectural décor elements; including:

  • Two larger-than-life artistic Sumo Sculptures
  • A Grand Floating Temple Roof inspired and designed with ‘kirizuma-zukuri’
  • Gable roof style Giant Japanese umbrellas or ‘Wagasa’ designed by renowned Japanese artist Kotaro Nishibori, fifth generation successor of Hiyoshiya, a maker of ‘Kyo-wagasa’ (Kyoto-style traditional umbrella)

JEMY also provides a platform for networking and learning Japanese martial arts in Malaysia. Attendees can participate in free Kendo workshops, immersing themselves in the art of Japanese swordsmanship, and Kyudo (Archery) will be demonstrated on the indoor stage, showcasing the precision and skill required for this traditional practice.

On the indoor stage, JEMY showcased beautiful cultural performance video presentations provided by Japan Foundation KL, along with the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia presenting Hokkaido prefecture as one of many travel destinations in Japan as well as screening the Awa Odori dance. Industry key players in The World of Japan Gourmet sharing the knowledge of Washoku and Kokushu by Japan Cuisine Special Goodwill Ambassadors: Master Chef Nao Kawasaki of long-established Sushi Oribe & Master of Saké Thomas Ling. Nucre Patisserie demonstrated the art of Wagashi-making, allowing attendees to witness the creation of exquisite Japanese sweets.

The Hi! Project Charity Zone offers an opportunity for attendees to pre-purchase tickets, granting access to thrilling performances while contributing to the Spastic Children’s Association of Selangor & Federal Territory.

Japan Expo Malaysia 2023 celebrates the finest in Japanese culture, promising a dazzling lineup with a unique blend of traditional artistry and contemporary performances. Headlining the cultural performances is sensational performer, Naomichi Hanazono. Hanazono, a renowned Japanese dancer and singer, will captivate the audience with his unparalleled style that merges traditional Japanese dance with modern flair, complemented by extravagant outfits adding grandeur to his performances.

Prepare to be enthralled by the spectacular performances of Ballistik Boyz from EXILE TRIBE and Psychic Fever on the grand outdoor stage at Piazza Area in Pavillion Bukit Jalil during Japan Expo Malaysia 2023. Ballistik Boyz, a powerhouse within EXILE TRIBE, will mesmerize the audience with their incredible singing voices and mind-blowing choreography, creating an unforgettable experience for their dedicated fans. Following their act, Psychic Fever, a seven-member group comprising elite students from the renowned dance school EXPG STUDIO operated by LDH, will take the stage, showcasing their infectious energy, mesmerizing vocals, and cool choreography. Brace yourselves for an electrifying show filled with talent and passion.

Moreover, fans will have the extraordinary chance to meet and greet both Ballistik Boyz and Psychic Fever, making JEMY2023 an event that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on everyone.

We are delighted to announce that the immensely talented Sakurazaka46 will also be gracing the stage at JEMY2023 for the first time in Malaysia! Sakurazaka46, also known as “Sakura zaka46” or “Sakamichi46,” is a Japanese idol group formed under the management of Sony Music Entertainment. They are a sister group of the renowned Nogizaka46 and Keyakizaka46. Sakurazaka46 made their debut in 2020, and since then, they have taken the Japanese music scene by storm with their exceptional talent and unique style.

Malaysians will also witness many familiar talents, new as well as up-and-coming artists on the JEMY stage, including:

  • Banzai Japan
  • SUPER★DRAGON
  • Natsume and team
  • AMEFURASSHI
  • XLAMP, just to name a few.

JEMY 2023 is aiming to bridge music from Japan with local artists who share the same passion for Japanese music has always been a key content at JEMY and would like to instil cross-cultural collaboration through music by introducing Malaysian DJ Harimao, the DJ duo known for electrifying anime-inspired, high energy performances, and Rina-Hime, hailing from Kuala Lumpur with heavy Japanese Pop Rock influence gracing JEMY stage.

Japan Expo Malaysia 2023 captivated audiences with its stellar lineup of artists and engaging zones. From music performances to cultural experiences and digital fun, JEMY2023 will undoubtedly be an unforgettable extravaganza for fans of all ages.
