As part of its efforts to understand and better serve the differently abled (OKU) community, especially the visually impaired in the city, the Kuala Lumpur Police recently ‘went blind’ and experience for themselves the pedestrian facilities for the visually impaired in Brickfields.
Taking to its official Facebook page, the Kuala Lumpur Police shared photos and details of a special programme with the visually impaired in the city on Wednesday (12 July).
During the programme, the Kuala Lumpur Police Chief CP Dato’ Mohd Shuhaily bin Mohd Zain alongside several police officers joined the OKU community walking around the Brickfields area while wearing blindfolders and using white canes, or the stick device used by the visually impaired to walk and scan their surroundings.
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) officers tested and experienced for themselves the tactile pedestrian facilities in Brickfields using white canes.
After experiencing the struggles of the visually impaired himself, the Kuala Lumpur Police Chief urged residents to be more responsible in respecting and preserving the tactile pedestrian facilities around the city.
Mohd Shuhaily asserted,
“Based on my observation, there are still many selfish individuals that blocked these facilities for the OKU community by parking their vehicles.”
“Imagine if there’s a motorcycle with an exhaust that’s still hot being parked at this tactile pedestrian walkway, it would cause the visually impaired to get injured even if the vehicle is only parked there for a short time.”
Hence, the Kuala Lumpur Police Chief urged road users to adhere to traffic laws around the city and only park their vehicles at designated parking spots so as to not block the tactile pedestrian facilities for the visually impaired.
Kudos to Mohd Shuhaily and his team for going beyond the call of duty and experiencing for themselves the facilities for the visually impaired in the city, so as to serve the OKU community better.
