The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has urged the public to be wary of a widespread scam of fake driving licenses or locally known as ‘lesen terbang’ that are still prevalent in social media to this day. Moreover, JPJ said that drivers should exercise more caution in obtaining driving licences and not fall victim to such scams.
According to BERNAMA, JPJ deputy director-general (management) M. Janagarajan stressed that these forged licences are non-valid and are an offence committed by scammers. He asserted,
“Actually this is not an issue of a ‘flying licence’, the real issue is forgery. The licence is not a legitimate one. It is an offence committed by scammers whereby this ‘licence’ has no record nor does it exist in the JPJ system.”
“If a driver obtains a licence by this means, he or she doesn’t actually own a valid licence and needs to remember that it is fake,”
Janagarajan further elaborated that his department has identified many victims of license scammers and iterated that action is being taken through JPJ’s driving license integrity department. He revealed that the modus operandi of these scammers is to post advertisements on social media claiming that the forged licenses are legitimate when they are in fact, not.
Moreover, some victims were even scammed by not receiving anything after making payments to these irresponsible parties. When making a complaint, the scammer’s account was found to be closed and the payment can’t be traced after it was made.
Janagarajan said that JPJ is working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to take court action against suspects who scam the public.
