Teachers play a big part in shaping young minds and preparing them to become future leaders, but they often say that big responsibilities should come with better pay.
A recent discussion has been blowing up among netizens after a user shared on X claiming that teachers these days are earning high salaries.
“Teachers are earning a lot”
In the post, the user shared how surprised he was to find out that teachers around his age are earning over RM8,000, using his own sisters as examples.
The caption read:
“Teachers are earning a lot these days. They’re roughly around my age, I’m 34 and their salaries are over RM8,000. My sisters are all teachers, and I always thought they didn’t get paid much.”
The post quickly went viral, with some netizens expressing mixed reactions, agreeing with the claim, while others were left sceptical.
Netizens started flooding the comment section with their thoughts.
“They’re still considered underpaid based on the job summary, in my opinion. Because in 2024, teachers have to teach both kids and parents.”
“It’s not that much compared to the corporate world, where someone with less than 5 years of experience can earn above RM8k. And then, with all the expenses these days, like school contributions and helping students, in the end, teachers don’t have much left. Office workers have it easier with all the claims they can make.”
“Their salary is high. But after all the deductions, how much is left? My sister is a teacher, and by the end of the month, they ration food. If you ask if they travel, they stay home. If you ask if they shop, no. But they save up to buy tickets to go back to the peninsula. With 6 people, how much is the cost of a ticket?”
“I guess it depends on the grade. My cousin, who’s 35, still earns around RM3k+, my younger sibling who’s posted in the rural areas for just a year is nearly at RM5k. The rest of my cousins, aged 30-34, all earn below RM6k. The RM8k and above salaries are for DG48 and above grades.”
“My aunt’s final basic salary as a teacher was around RM11k after the government implemented the SSPA. This doesn’t include allowances, which bring it to nearly RM12-13k. Her pension will be around RM6.6k per month. Whoever gets to be a government teacher is lucky.”
