The Hong Kong science fiction and action film Back to the Past is performing exceptionally well at the Malaysian box office, raking in a whopping RM3.5 million just two days after its release on December 31.

Its leading star, Louis Koo, had expressed interest in visiting Malaysia to personally thank fans for their tremendous support. However, while occupied with promotional events for the film, Louis was reportedly admitted to a hospital in China, according to a viral social media post.

Some netizens noted that Louis Koo appeared at a promotional event in Foshan, China, wearing a mask and looking unwell. He was not seen at subsequent events.

Co-star Jessica Hsuan also shared with fans that attending the promotional events had been exhausting but rewarding.

“It’s really tiring, but I’m happy to be tired. You’re all tired too, so please take care of yourselves.”

At another event, co-star Raymond Lam confirmed that Louis could not attend, without specifying the reason, except to say that Louis was unwell, according to Hong Kong media reports.

“Please DO NOT record the movie”

In an Instagram post this morning (January 3), TGV Cinemas issued a stern reminder to patrons, highlighting that recording a movie inside the theatre is an offence under the Copyright Act 1987 (Section 43A). The cinema chain emphasised that this effort is meant to respect filmmakers’ hard work.

“We love your excitement. Please remember, no photos or recordings inside the cinema. No spoilers either, so others can enjoy the movie.”

At the time of writing, Louis has not released a statement regarding his absence from some promotional events in China.

Back to the Past is the direct sequel to the TV series A Step into the Past, which aired in 2001. In the series, Louis plays Hong Xiu Long, who travels back to the Qin Dynasty for a mission that was supposed to last only 30 minutes—but ends up trapped in that era.

The movie, featuring most of the original cast, takes place 20 years after the events of the show.

To those who have watched the movie, what did you think of it? (No spoilers, please!)
