It’s Merdeka Day and the parade at Dataran Merdeka was in full swing this morning!

Huge crowds gathered at the location to watch the parade and to celebrate our country’s independence, but there are some people in attendance who were reminding us as to why, even in this day and age, we cannot have nice things.

Michelle, a Malaysian who attended the parade, shared with WORLD OF BUZZ, how a man was breaking the tree branches at Dataran Merdeka while others gave him disgusted looks.

“When I saw him breaking the first branch, I was in shock. The lady in front of me had the same reaction. We were both speechless,” she said.

She added that the view of the parade was not blocked by the tree branches, hence, there was no real reason to vandalise and destroy the trees.

“Later, he broke another 2 bigger branches. I was livid and wanted to say something but didn’t want to cause any trouble, fearing that he might verbally attack me instead,”

“So, I took a video in hopes to spread awareness. About how this is a really frowned upon act, and that we should take better care of public property. Otherwise, don’t complain when we don’t have nice things,” Michelle added.

Michelle went on to explain that the Independence Day celebrations should give people a sense of hope, instead of further destroying people’s faith in humanity.

“When heading towards Dataran Merdeka, I was overwhelmed with the high emotions and patriotism displayed from all the races present. So, I’m appalled that there are some people who behaved this way.”

Especially considering the fact that it’s our National Independence Day, we should be feeling a sense of appreciation for what we have, including the gorgeous (and limited) nature that surrounds our cities.

We’re already cutting down forest after forest. Can we at least show what little trees we have in our bustling towns some love and respect?

You can check out videos of the man’s disappointing actions here:

After 65 years of independence, we need to do better. We have to do better.
